Recent Acquisitions
The Paul Paletti Gallery is the only gallery in Kentucky exclusively dedicated to museum quality fine art photography. The exhibit includes a select group of photographers including Carl Chiarenza, Rolfe Horn, Dominic Rouse, John Sexton, Aaron Siskind, Bradford Washburnand Edward Weston. These photographs are specially priced for the holiday season, many at less than half the prices at galleries in New York, Chicago and Boston. The show will open with the First Friday Gallery Hop on December 4th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and run through the end of May, 2010.
Elizabeth Opalenik, Poetic Grace
As part of the Louisville Visual Arts Festival, the Paul Paletti Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of some of the most famous photographers in the world during the 1970’s. These photographers came to Louisville, Kentucky to exhibit and support the Center for Photographic Studies, or as part of the Images and Ideas Lecture Series sponsored by the Center and the Speed Art Museum.
The Center for Photographic Studies was an independent creative photography school established by C.J. Pressma in Louisville in 1970. In addition to offering courses and darkroom availability, the Center also mounted exhibitions and created portfolios of original prints for sale by some of the country’s most prominent photographic artists. Additionally, the Center partnered with the Speed Art Museum to produce a lecture series on photography, drawing some of the greatest photographers at the time to Louisville.
The exhibition at the Paul Paletti Gallery consists of many of the famous photographers who came to Louisville for these events. Included in the exhibit are Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock, Judy Dater, Ralph Gibson, Emmet Gowin, Robert Heinecken, Ken Josephson, Les Krims, Anne Noggle, Henry Holmes Smith, W. Eugene Smith, Jerry Uelsmann, Minor White, Garry Winogrand, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, and Murray Riis.
As one of the founding partners in the first Louisville Visual Arts Festival, the Paul Paletti Gallery is honored to exhibit the work of these world class photographers and celebrate the rich visual arts culture created by people like C.J. Pressma for the benefit of the entire community. The Center for Photographic Studies brought the photographic art world to our doorstep and introduced Louisville to some of the greatest creative geniuses in photography.
Paul Paletti Gallery is located at 713 East Market Street, Louisville, Kentucky 40202. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and by appointment. Phone: (502) 589-9254. Affordable Art Show
Just in time for the holidays, the Paul Paletti Gallery is pleased to present The Affordable Art Show. This exhibit showcases the photographs of Bruce Cook, Daniel Lin, and Gayle Moore.
The artworks are for sale at $300 each or less. This represents an outstanding value for the purchase of superbly crafted original artworks by very gifted photographers.
Bruce Cook, a Louisville dentist, works with a large format camera to produce striking landscapes and environmental portraits.
Daniel Lin, of Zionsville, IN, is a neurobiologist, for whom photography is both an artistic outlet and a refuge. Daniel creates landscapes and abstracts which are richly toned and atmospheric.
Gayle Moore, of Indianapolis, creates delicate and elegant high key black and white photographs of flowers and botanical arrangements.
Additional images in the show by Dobree Adams, Andrew Dalinger, John London, Megan Mette, DavidModica, Rachel Seed and Victor Simon exhibit a wide range of vision and techniques, in black and white and in color.
The show will be on display from December 5, 2008 through February 27, 2009. Gallery hours are 9-5 weekdays, and by appointment.
Bill Owens: Suburbia
Paul Paletti Gallery presents "Bill Owens: Suburbia" a forty-year retrospective of a unique and humorous vision of suburbia, the counterculture, and the gaze of the modern American worker. This exhibit is in conjunction with the publication of his book titled Bill Owens, and will be on display from April 2 to May 30, 2008.
In his forty-year career, Bill Owens has captured some of the most pivotal cultural phenomenon of the late twentieth century. In 1969, he photographed the legendary free Rolling Stones concert at Altamont Speedway, where the Hell's Angels served as security and killed one fan. Throughout the 1970s, Owens witnessed the massive immigration of rural people into Californian suburbs, and subsequently became one of the first photographers to aim his lens at the national growth of suburban sprawl, which resulted in his critically acclaimed book Suburbia (1973). Influenced greatly by the work of Farm Security Administration photographers, Diane Arbus, and Weegee, Owens records the day-to-day lives of middle-class America, engaging in what he describes as "a visual anthropology" with the camera.
Howard Schatz: H20
Paul Paletti Gallery presents "Howard Schatz: H20," the stunningly beautiful color images of ballerinas, models, and acrobats from Cirque du Soleil, all photographed underwater. This exhibit, in conjunction with the publication of Schatz's new book H20, will be on display from December 3, 2007 to March 31, 2008.
Ethereal and elegant, Schatz's figures soar, twist, and plunge in the invisible weightless underwater world of a slow-motion dance. These large scale, vibrant photographs are a celebration of beauty, brilliance, form, and movement.
Not only has Schatz had exhibitions in museums and galleries internationally, but he also has a substantial corporate clientele. His work has been published in magazines around the world and has been featured on major television stations in the U.S. and Europe.
John Wimberley: The Classic and the Spiritual
Paul Paletti Gallery presents "The Classic and the Spiritual: Photographs by John Wimberley." This exhibit will be on display from September 4 to November 30, 2007.
Wimberley's work is characterized by a fusion of his technical mastery and his spiritual vision. His photographs display an elegance of the living essence present in his subjects, whether they be rocks, clouds, landscapes or detritus left by the hand of man. His recent subjects include Native American rock art sites, and the ghost towns and abandoned mining camps in Nevada.
After forty years as a photographer, Wimberley's work has been shown in more than 50 exhibitions and has been published around the world. His work is represented in over 400 public and private collections, including many major museums.
